Fotobi, Ghana Water Supply Project

Fotobi, Ghana

Overview

The EWB-USA Phoenix Professional Chapter is partnering with the community of Fotobi, Ghana to improve access to safe, reliable water. Fotobi is a rural community where residents currently rely on a river, hand-dug wells and unreliable pump systems for their water sources — conditions that pose serious health risks, especially for children.

The Challenge

Community members collect water from a variety of unreliable water sources.  The local river runs sporadically, hand-dug wells dry up for months at at time, and wells equipped with pump systems are often inoperable due to mechanical failure.  Existing water sources are far from many of the homes which places a heavy burden on families who must travel long distances to collect water daily.

Our Solution

Our chapter is working to install two boreholes equipped with pumps, elevated storage tanks, and community spigots to deliver clean water directly to the community. The project includes community engagement, site assessments, and sustainable design to ensure long-term operation and local ownership of the water system.

Impact

Once complete, the project will provide hundreds of community members with reliable access to safe water, dramatically reducing waterborne illness and freeing up time — especially for women and children — previously spent collecting water. The chapter's engineers work hand-in-hand with local partners to ensure the system is maintained and community-owned for generations to come.
